Title: |
M211, Quantum Theory |
Institution: |
Murdoch University, Australia |
Level: |
Degree, diploma, postgraduate. |
Description: |
This is a core course in the Physics programme and is also a third year elective for Chemistry students. Its principle aim is to study the experimental basis of the atomic and quantum theories and to apply them to simple atomic and molecular systems. It also provides a critique of classical physics and covers foundations of quantum theory, wave mechanics, one dimensional systems, the hydrogen atom, atomic structure, chemical bonding and valence, polyelectronic molecules, relativity, and the philosophical basis of modern physics. Students will be expected to complete four experimental projects during the course. Assessment is based on performance in written assignments, laboratory work and final examination. Prerequisites: M122 Particles in Motion or M150 Physics for Science and Engineering I and M261 Mathematical Methods. It is recommended that students pass M222 Interactions and Fields and or M151 Physics for Science and Engineering II before undertaking this course. Programmes for which this course is required or in which it can be included: Bachelor of Science in Physics Graduate Diploma in Science (Physics). |
